Aachen is a spa town close to the German border with Belgium and the Netherlands. Its cathedral was founded around the year 800, although the Gothic altar was a later addition. The treasury of the cathedral contains medieval artifacts and houses the tomb of Charlemagne, who was buried in 814. Not far from the cathedral rises the building of the city hall in the Baroque style with frescoes of the 19th century. The drinking pavilion "Elisa's Colonnade" is famous for its fountains with thermal water.
Construction of this palatine chapel, with its octagonal basilica and cupola, began c. 790–800 under the Emperor Charlemagne. Originally inspired by the churches of the Eastern part of the Holy Roman Empire, it was splendidly enlarged in the Middle Ages. Cathedral included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
